As a child I really wasn't too happy about taking baths. I always preferred showers, in, wet / out, dry. There always seemed like there was something much more fun to do than to lie in hot water. I remember being forced into a long arduous bath after a particularly muddy 3 day Scout camp. By the time my skin resembled skin colour again, my head was thumping so hard that I vowed never to immerse my whole body in hot water again. Many years later it was with great reluctance that I agreed to a visit to the hot springs after a long day hiking in Huerquehue National Park. Needless to say I have never looked back. If you have never considered relaxing in a thermal hot water pool in the great outdoors, and then jumping into an icy river to cool off, now is your time to re-think!

The various thermal hot springs resorts around Pucón are the places to be seen. Rain or shine, (my personal favorite is snow), these pools are perfect for hanging out, reminiscing about your trip to date, taking in nature, even star gazing after dark and generally remembering what it is like to feel alive.

For those of us who live here, in such proximity to these wonderful venues for detox and time out, we hold them in reverence. It's not a weekly outing for us locals, if anything for me they work as a stress indicator. If a girlfriend gets in touch and asks if I want to join her for an afternoon at one of the resorts, the first thing I ask is if everything is ok. We go there to de-stress and forget about life for a while. And of course, the hot springs are first on the list of activities when friends and family come to stay.

Around Pucón there are over 20 resorts to choose from ranging from rustic to more developed Hotel & Spa options. If you go for a more rustic option the infrastructure is definitely more basic. You will change in a wooden hut with individual cubicles and doors that reach from neck to calf height, but the views of the surrounding mist clad valley will take your mind away from the draft around your ankles. You need to take a pair of flip flops or sneakers to walk from pool to pool, as well as a head torch if you go at night. If you prefer a bit more comfort, the Spa resorts offer spacious changing rooms, tiled pools, sun loungers, bathrobes and slippers. You can even lunch there or choose to stay overnight. Also included is that beautiful mysterious view of the lush forest valley stretching out into the distance.

Whichever option suits you best, if you are going to go for a hot spring experience then do it here in Pucón. With the Villarrica volcano looming in its omnipresent state over the whole town, there is something so right in knowing that the geothermal activity that created the volcano and its lava lake in the first place, is the reason why these fabulous places exist.
